EDITORS COMMENTS
Night of Despair: Manuel Almunia's Unforgettable Evening as Arsenal Fell to Manchester City's 3-0 Victory (November 2008) In the annals of Arsenal Football Club's history, the night of November 22, 2008, at City of Manchester Stadium, will forever be etched as a night of despair for one of its beloved goalkeepers, Manuel Almunia. The Barclays Premier League encounter between Manchester City and Arsenal that evening would end in a humiliating 3-0 defeat for the Gunners, with Almunia's performance being a major talking point. The image captures the dejected look on Almunia's face as he watches the ball trickle into the net for Manchester City's third goal. The Spaniard, who had been Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper since the departure of Jens Lehmann, was at fault for all three goals. The first was a weak punch that allowed Craig Bellamy to score from a corner, the second was a misjudged cross that allowed Elano to head in unchallenged, and the third was a mistake that allowed Stephen Ireland to capitalize on a rebound. The Arsenal fans in attendance that night could only watch in disbelief as their team's title hopes began to fade away. The defeat left Arsenal in fifth place, eight points behind leaders Manchester United, and the pressure on manager Arsene Wenger to make changes grew. Almunia's error-ridden performance that night would be a turning point in his Arsenal career. He would go on to lose his place in the team, with Wenger bringing in Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski as his replacement. Almunia would eventually leave the club in 2014, having made a total of 148 appearances for the Gunners. This photograph serves as a reminder of the highs and lows of football, and the unpredictability of the beautiful game.
