Upon his arrival in St. Petersburg in 1863, Repin moved to the home of the architect A. Petrov. He shared a room with his nephews, Alexander and Alexei, whose sister he would later marry and who, like him, were enrolled in the drawing school of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. It was they who served as models for this work, which he presented to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1865, the year of its integration.
