EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a full dress helmet worn by non-commissioned officers or other ranks of the Bengal Horse Artillery in 1835. Crafted with cloth over cork or pith, this distinctive headgear reflects the unique style and identity of these soldiers during that era. During this period, the Bengal Horse Artillery was organized into twelve troops, divided among three brigades stationed at Meerut, Cawnpore, and Karnal. Both European and Indian soldiers were part of these troops and would have donned this particular type of helmet. Although officers wore a similar pattern made from superior fabric, it is clear that this helmet design draws inspiration from the British heavy cavalry pattern helmet worn between 1834-1843. The intricate details on this piece exemplify the pride and honor associated with military service during that time. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and heritage preserved within the National Army Museum in London. This print captures not only an exquisite artifact but also offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in military history. The image portrays strength, discipline, and unity as embodied by those who proudly wore such uniforms while serving their country.
