Claire Campbell, 1882. Creator: Edouard Manet (French, 1832-1883)
Claire Campbell, 1882. During the late 1870s, Manet turned increasingly to pastel when ill health prevented him from painting in oil. A confident draftsman, he composed pastels without any reliance on underdrawing; each stroke provided both line and colour. The palette here is limited to his favorite colours: blue, white, gray, and black. He exploited the mediums velvety texture to describe this sitters glossy black chignon and petal-pink skin. He hardly ever specified his backgrounds, giving them only one colour, as seen in this example

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a stunning portrait of Claire Campbell, created by the renowned French artist Edouard Manet in 1882. During this period, Manet turned to pastel as his medium of choice due to his declining health, which prevented him from using oil paints. Despite this limitation, Manet's confidence as a draftsman shines through in his composition, as he effortlessly combines line and color without relying on underdrawing. In this particular artwork, Manet showcases his favorite colors - blue, white, gray, and black - creating a limited yet impactful palette. The velvety texture of the pastels allows him to beautifully depict Claire's glossy black chignon and her delicate petal-pink skin. Interestingly, Manet rarely paid much attention to background details in his works; instead, he often used only one color to fill the space behind the subject. This exquisite piece exemplifies both impressionism and realism - two artistic movements that greatly influenced Manet's work during the 19th century. It is now part of The Cleveland Museum of Art collection and serves as a testament to Manet's exceptional talent and unique approach to portraiture.
