EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant chromolithograph print captures the esteemed figure of Robert C Schenck, a distinguished US Army general and diplomat. Created in 1874 by the talented artist Faustin Betbeder, this portrait showcases Schenck's commanding presence and military uniform adorned with epaulettes. Schenck's remarkable career spanned significant historical events, including his role as a Union Army general during the American Civil War. In recognition of his exceptional service, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as the US Minister to the United Kingdom in 1871. Interestingly, it was during a reception for Queen Victoria in Somerset that Schenck found himself unexpectedly contributing to British culture. Persuaded by those around him, he penned down his rules for the game of poker. This act inadvertently sparked its rapid popularity across Britain, where it became known as "Schenck Poker". The print not only commemorates Schenck's military achievements but also highlights his unintentional influence on leisure activities beyond warfare. It serves as a testament to his multifaceted character and impact on both diplomatic relations and popular pastimes. Faustin Betbeder skillfully captures all these elements within this colorful caricature-like portrayal of Robert C Schenck. The attention to detail brings out every aspect of this influential man who left an indelible mark on history through both war and unexpected contributions like introducing poker to British society.
