Seals Basking on Newly Formed Pancake Ice Off Cape Evans, c1910–1913, (1913)
Seals Basking on Newly Formed Pancake Ice Off Cape Evans, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a serene moment in the harsh Antarctic landscape during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Taken between 1910 and 1913, the image showcases a group of seals basking on newly formed pancake ice off Cape Evans. Scott's Terra Nova Expedition was an ambitious scientific endeavor that aimed to explore the uncharted territories of Antarctica while also attempting to be the first to reach the South Pole. The diverse team consisted of experts in various fields, including geology, zoology, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. However, despite their determination and perseverance, Scott and his team faced numerous challenges along their journey. Upon reaching the South Pole on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies on their return journey from the pole, Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March. It would be eight months before their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries documenting their struggles. This photograph serves as a reminder of both the beauty and unforgiving nature of Antarctica—a testament to human resilience in pursuit of knowledge amidst extreme conditions. Preserved from Scott's Last Expedition volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , it stands as a historical artifact capturing one chapter within humanity's quest for exploration.
