It is an example of the modular front developed by Robert Lutyens, which was applied to steel-framed buildings and was intended to make extending the premises easier. The store was probably designed by J M Monro and Son. It closed in 2007 and the premises was later occupied by the clothing retailer Peacocks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Marks and Spencer store in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Located at 2-12 Market Place, this historical building boasts a modular front design developed by the renowned architect Robert Lutyens. The modular front was specifically created for steel-framed buildings like this one, allowing for easier expansion of the premises. Originally established in 1909 on Westgate Street, Marks and Spencer quickly outgrew its humble beginnings and opened the larger Market Place store in 1936. It is believed that J M Monro and Son were responsible for designing this impressive structure. The distinctive chequered exterior of the building exudes a sense of timeless elegance, perfectly capturing the essence of a classic department store. For many years, it served as a beloved shopping destination for locals and visitors alike. Sadly, after nearly a century of operation, Marks and Spencer closed its doors in 2007. However, fashion retailer Peacocks later took over these premises to continue serving shoppers with their clothing needs. This remarkable photograph not only captures an architectural gem but also preserves an important piece of Dewsbury's history. Its intricate details tell stories of growth and transformation within retail spaces throughout time.
