Born in an aristocratic family from Aragón, Spain, Benedict XIII became a controversial figure in religious history as he was officially recognized as an antipope by the Catholic Church. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, the papacy was based in Avignon, France, due to political pressures. Benedict XIII, who was a supporter of the Avignon papacy, was elected as its pope in 1394, but his election was not recognized by the Roman obedience, which was led by Pope Boniface IX. As a result, Benedict XIII is considered an antipope in the history of the Catholic Church.
