Huts Labour Nissen Portable Contruction

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the harsh winter of 1917, soldiers of the British Army toiled in the snow to erect a Nissen hut, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the war effort. Designed by Major Peter Norman Nissen of the 29th Company Royal Engineers in April 1916, Nissen huts quickly gained popularity due to their portability and economic efficiency. The Nissen hut, named after its inventor, was a prefabricated corrugated iron structure that could be easily assembled on site with minimal tools and labor. The huts were used for a variety of purposes, including barracks, mess halls, hospitals, and even morgues. Their simple design and quick construction time made them an essential component of the British military infrastructure during World War One. In this photograph, we see a group of soldiers working together to erect a Nissen hut in the snow. The men, bundled up against the cold, are using shovels and other tools to clear the ground and position the hut's framework. The corrugated iron sheets, which would soon cover the structure, are stacked nearby. The scene is one of hard work and determination, as the soldiers labor to provide shelter and comfort for their comrades in the harsh conditions of the battlefield. Nissen huts remained in use long after the end of World War One, and their legacy can still be seen in various forms of prefabricated buildings used today. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of the men and women who served during the First World War, and the innovative solutions they developed to meet the challenges of the battlefield.
