EDITORS COMMENTS
This painting by Albert Collings depicts King Edward VIII in his coronation robes, an image that was intended for inclusion in the pre-prepared Coronation Record Number of the Illustrated London News (ILN) in 1937. Edward VIII, born in 1894, ascended to the British throne in January 1936 following the death of his father, King George V. However, his reign was short-lived as he abdicated in December of that same year, relinquishing the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite. The ILN archive holds the Coronation Record Number, complete with blank pages ready for actual photographs from the coronation day that never took place. This fictitious portrait of Edward VIII in his coronation robes serves as a poignant reminder of the historical events that unfolded during this period. The Duke of Windsor, as Edward VIII was later known, remains a fascinating figure in British history, and this painting offers a glimpse into the regal image that could have been. Collings' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricately designed coronation robes, which include the ermine-trimmed mantle and the St. Edward's Crown adorned with precious stones. The painting captures the regal bearing and solemn expression of the King, adding to its historical significance. Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his abdication, this portrait of King Edward VIII in his coronation robes continues to intrigue and captivate audiences, offering a glimpse into what might have been.
