This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the majestic Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas, an endangered species of sea turtle. The intricate details of the turtle's scaled shell and its distinctive greenish coloration are beautifully captured in this engraving, which was created by Heath after an illustration by the renowned British naturalist, Dr. George Shaw, for his seminal work "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801. Green turtles are the largest hard-shelled turtles in the Atlantic Ocean, reaching lengths of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) and weighing up to 190 kilograms (420 pounds). They are named for the greenish color of their fat, which is rich in vitamin A and provides them with energy during long migrations and periods of fasting. Sadly, Green Turtles are currently listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They face numerous threats, including habitat loss, bycatch in fishing gear, and poaching for their meat, eggs, and shells. Conservation efforts, such as protected areas, community-based turtle conservation projects, and international cooperation, are essential to ensure the survival of this magnificent creature and preserve the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.
