EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy in 1843, offers a glimpse into the traditional attire of the natives of the Island of Cape Verde during the early 19th century. The Island of Cape Verde, located off the western coast of Africa, was a Portuguese colony during this time, and its inhabitants were a diverse mix of African, European, and Asian descendants. In this illustration, several Cape Verdean natives are depicted wearing various garments that reflect their cultural heritage and the island's tropical climate. The figure on the left wears a long, flowing mantle made of a bright, patterned fabric, which is draped over a simple tunic. A shawl is wrapped around his shoulders, and a veil covers his head, protecting him from the sun. The central figure is a woman, who is wearing a voluminous, floor-length cloak made of a lighter fabric, adorned with intricate patterns and fringes. She also wears a headscarf, which is held in place by a decorative brooch. The figure on the right is a man, who is wearing a short, fitted tunic, which is tucked into a pair of loose-fitting trousers. He is also wearing a headscarf and carrying a staff. The handcoloured detail in this engraving adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a fascinating representation of the traditional dress of the Cape Verdean people during this period. The illustration offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Island of Cape Verde and the diverse influences that shaped its unique identity.
