EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Publius Helvius Pertinax, the Roman Emperor from 193 AD, in an elegant and regal pose. The engraving, created by Abraham Bogaerts as part of his seminal work "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, offers a striking representation of Pertinax's noble character. Born in the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis, Pertinax rose to prominence as a successful author, playwright, and poet before being appointed emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of Commodus. Known for his strong moral principles and commitment to justice, Pertinax implemented several reforms during his brief reign, including the restoration of the traditional Roman Senate and the reduction of the Praetorian Guard's power. Despite his popular support, Pertinax faced challenges from within the Roman military. The Praetorian Guard, displeased with his efforts to curb their influence, conspired against him, leading to his eventual downfall. In March 193 AD, Pertinax was assassinated, marking the end of his reign and the beginning of the infamous "Year of the Five Emperors." This copperplate engraving, produced during the 17th century, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the enigmatic figure of Emperor Pertinax and the complexities of the Roman Empire during his reign. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of his toga to the expressive features of his face, serve to bring this historical figure to life.
