In an evacuation named Berlin, dozens of crossings were made in small boats by British and Canadian Engineers under heavy German fire. Over 2, 000 troops were rescued between around 2200 hours on the 25th and 0545 hours on the 26th of September 1944. They landed in the area where the Monument stands. It is of polished granite and shows the badges of both the British and Canadian Engineers plus a line sketch of the crossings. In gold letters is the legend, They were just whispers and shadows in the night. In the background can be seen the Arnhem railway bridge. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures The Royal Engineers Evacuation Memorial, located in Arnhem, Netherlands. The memorial commemorates the brave actions of British and Canadian Engineers during the final days of Operation Market Garden in September 1944. Amidst the chaos and intensity of battle, these engineers orchestrated a daring evacuation named "Berlin," during which over 2,000 troops were rescued from the north side of the Rhine at Oosterbeek. The evacuation took place between 2200 hours on September 25 and 0545 hours on September 26, 1944. The soldiers made their way across the river in small boats, braving heavy German fire. The monument stands in the area where the rescued troops landed, and is a testament to their heroism. The memorial is made of polished granite and features the badges of both the British and Canadian Engineers, as well as a line sketch of the crossings. In gold letters, the legend "They were just whispers and shadows in the night" pays tribute to the stealth and determination of the engineers who carried out this daring operation. In the background, the Arnhem railway bridge can be seen, adding historical context to this poignant scene. The evacuation at Oosterbeek was reminiscent of the British withdrawal from Gallipoli during World War I, and this memorial stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers during a pivotal moment in military history.
