EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Antonio Verico, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1844, depicts various scenes from the Pillar of the Boatmen, a monumental Roman column erected in Lutetia (Paris) in honor of Jupiter by the guild of boatmen in the 1st century AD. The column, also known as the Monumenti di Barcaioli di Parigi, is adorned with intricate carvings of various gods and deities, including Vulcan, Jove, Apollo, Bacchus, Hercules, Castor, Pollux, and others. The Germanic and Norse deities Thor and a goddess, possibly Nehalennia, are also depicted, reflecting the syncretism of Roman and Celtic beliefs during this period. The interpretation of these deities through the Roman lens is known as the "interpretatio romana." The engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the historical fusion of different cultural beliefs and the artistic representation of mythology during the Roman Empire. The intricate details of the carvings are brought to life through the handcoloured techniques used by Verico, adding an extra layer of visual interest to this historical illustration.
