EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken around 1905, showcases the awe-inspiring Ramesseum, the memorial temple or mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramesses II, also known as Ramesses the Great. Situated in the heart of the Theban Necropolis in Upper Egypt, on the western bank of the River Nile, opposite the modern city of Luxor, this architectural marvel dates back to the New Kingdom period, around 1250 BC. Ramesses II was one of Egypt's most celebrated pharaohs, reigning for over 66 years and leaving an indelible mark on Egyptian history. His mortuary temple, dedicated to the gods Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, and Ptah, is a testament to his power and wealth. The temple complex, adorned with intricate carvings and colossal statues of the pharaoh, is a breathtaking sight that continues to fascinate visitors from around the world. The photograph captures the temple in its semi-ruined state, with the passage of time having taken its toll on the once-majestic structures. Yet, despite the wear and tear, the grandeur of the Ramesseum remains palpable, transporting us back to a time when ancient Egypt was the center of the world. The statues, though weathered, still exude an air of regality, while the ruins serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of history and the passage of time.
