This coloured engraving depicts Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, during his campaign to reclaim the British throne for the House of Stuart in the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. The image, created by G Will after Wass-Dail in 1745, captures the young prince in military regalia, surrounded by his loyal Jacobite forces. The rebellion, which aimed to overthrow the Protestant House of Hanover and restore the Catholic Stuart dynasty, gained significant support in Scotland and briefly threatened the English crown. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the grandson of King James II, was exiled in France after his father's defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. He arrived in Scotland in 1745, rallying support from the Scottish clans and leading his army to victory at the Battle of Prestonpans in September of that year. The rebellion reached its peak when the Jacobite forces marched on Edinburgh and captured the city, but their advance was halted at the Battle of Falkirk in January 1746. Despite the eventual failure of the rebellion, Prince Charles Edward Stuart remains a symbol of Scottish national pride and the enduring legacy of the Stuart dynasty.
