EDITORS COMMENTS
One of Two Royal Air Force Westland Whirlwind HARMk10s, XD186, from B Flight of No.202 Squadron, based at RAF Leconfield, is shown in this compelling photograph conducting a mid-air refueling operation on the British Petroleum North Sea Gas Rig, WA, 40 miles east of Spurn Point, in March 1974. The mission of this helicopter, however, was not related to oil exploration but to rescue a seaman in distress. The French trawler Batiss had encountered trouble in the North Sea, and the Royal Air Force was alerted to the situation. XD186, piloted by Flying Officer D.A. McNamara and Flight Engineer Sgt. R.A. Smith, was dispatched to the scene. The helicopter's advanced capabilities, including its Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile system, were not required for this humanitarian mission. Instead, the crew skillfully maneuvered the Whirlwind to the stricken vessel, where they rescued the injured seaman and transported him to Grimsby Hospital for further medical attention. The photograph captures the moment of refueling, an essential aspect of the Whirlwind's extended range capabilities, allowing it to cover vast distances over the North Sea. The image is a testament to the Royal Air Force's versatility and commitment to saving lives, even in the most challenging environments. This historic photograph is an essential addition to any collection showcasing the heroic actions of the Royal Air Force and the vital role of the Westland Whirlwind HARMk10s in search and rescue operations.
