Roberts' military career began in earnest during the First English Civil War (1642-1646), where he distinguished himself in several key battles, including the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. It was here that the Parliamentarian forces, led by Roberts and Cromwell, decisively defeated the Royalist army, marking a turning point in the war. Following the First Civil War, Roberts continued to serve the Parliamentarian cause during the Second English Civil War (1648-1651), where he played a crucial role in the Siege of Oxford and the eventual capture of King Charles I. Despite his military successes, Roberts' life was not without personal tragedy. In 1648, his wife, Elizabeth, died during childbirth, leaving him to raise their young daughter, Anne, on his own.
