1605 1662 Parliament Roberts

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir William Roberts: A Devoted Parliamentarian Commander in the English Civil War (1605-1662) This evocative portrait captures the stern and resolute visage of Sir William Roberts, a pivotal military figure during the tumultuous English Civil War (1642-1651). Born in 1605, Roberts allied himself with the Parliamentarian cause, becoming a trusted and capable commander in Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army. Roberts' military career began in earnest during the First English Civil War (1642-1646), where he distinguished himself in several key battles, including the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. It was here that the Parliamentarian forces, led by Roberts and Cromwell, decisively defeated the Royalist army, marking a turning point in the war. Following the First Civil War, Roberts continued to serve the Parliamentarian cause during the Second English Civil War (1648-1651), where he played a crucial role in the Siege of Oxford and the eventual capture of King Charles I. Roberts' unwavering commitment to the Parliamentarian cause earned him the esteem of his fellow commanders and the gratitude of the English people. Despite his military successes, Roberts' life was not without personal tragedy. In 1648, his wife, Elizabeth, died during childbirth, leaving him to raise their young daughter, Anne, on his own. Roberts continued to serve his country, eventually retiring from military life in 1650. He died in 1662, leaving behind a rich legacy as a devoted and effective military commander who played a significant role in shaping the future of England. This portrait, captured in the late 17th century, serves as a poignant reminder of Sir William Roberts' indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the Parliamentarian cause during the English Civil War.
