EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the heart of World War II, where a group of courageous women from East Hams unit of the W. J. A. C. stand proudly alongside their full trumpet band. However, there is more than just music and determination in this picture - meet Major, the Labrador mascot who has become an integral part of their unit. Major was gifted to these remarkable women by Mechanic Sgt. Major T. Hibbert, whose daughter happens to be a member of the unit. To ensure that Major feels at home with his new companions, he joins them during regular practice sessions and even takes on the role of leading the band. As drum major Eileen Wheeller throws her staff high into the air with skillful precision, it is clear that these women possess not only musical talent but also unwavering strength and camaraderie amidst conflict. The image captures a moment frozen in time - July 1944 - when these brave individuals found solace and inspiration through music while serving on the home front. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of how even in times of war and uncertainty, artistry and entertainment can provide respite for both those fighting on foreign soil and those supporting from home. It symbolizes resilience, unity, and above all else, showcases the invaluable contributions made by women during World War II.
