EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from May 1944, we witness the remarkable bravery and resilience of a pilot and his crew during World War II. The image captures a momentous discussion between the Squadron Commander and the Wellington crew after their daring attack on the Macchi Factory at Varese near the Swiss Frontier. The story behind this photograph is nothing short of extraordinary. After successfully completing their mission, these courageous men faced an arduous journey back to base with only one functioning engine in their RAF Wellington plane. Overcoming treacherous mountain ranges and heavily defended territories, they defied all odds by flying an astonishing 500 miles on just one engine. However, fate had another challenge in store for them as they approached their base. With sheer determination coursing through their veins, they managed to belly land the aircraft without any engines left to rely on. When questioned about their incredible feat by an Intelligence Officer, the modest pilot simply mentioned that he had belly landed off the runway. It was only later that everyone learned of this pilot's exceptional achievement in safely bringing his crew home despite insurmountable obstacles along the way. This awe-inspiring display of courage and skill serves as a testament to the unwavering spirit exhibited by those who fought valiantly during World War II.
