EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming photo print, we are transported back to the 1940s during World War II. The image captures a group of children from Stoke Newington eagerly bringing their broken toys to Leading Fireman Herbert Rogers, affectionately known as the "Teddy Bear Doctor". Herbert Rogers is a beloved figure in the community, regularly visiting day nurseries and schools to hold medical inspections for all sorts of damaged toys - from dolls to teddy bears. Once inspected, he takes these cherished playthings back to the Fire Station where dedicated firemen mend them in their spare time. What makes this act even more remarkable is that no charge is ever made for these repairs. Over the past two years alone, an astounding number of over two thousand toys have been fixed by Fireman Rogers and his team. This photograph not only highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of children during times of conflict but also showcases the selflessness and compassion displayed by members of our emergency services on the home front. It serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst war's chaos, acts of kindness can bring joy and comfort to those who need it most. Tovey's snapshot freezes this beautiful moment in time forever – a testament to humanity's ability to find solace through simple gestures amid turmoil.
