The Liverpool and Manchester Railway 1830
Coaches and a steam locomotive used on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, England. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened on the 15th September, 1830 and provided the first ever scheduled inter-city passenger and freight rail service. This was hugely successful. By the end of the year it had carried 70, 000 passengers. In 1831 445, 047 passengers travelled on the line. The first load of merchandise was transported from Liverpool to Manchester on 4.12.1830. In the following 20 years there were rail links between all Britains major towns. The opening of the railroads promoted employment and facilitated transportation of freight. By the 1850s the railway system had become so successful that it replaced many canals. The amount of cargo carried on the canals felll by nearly two thirds
