New York Stock Exchange, 1907 C014 / 0517

New York Stock Exchange. Trading being carried out circa November 1907 on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Broad Street, New York City, USA. This photograph is one of several secretly obtained with a camera hidden in the photographers sleeve. The trading floor (33 by 42.5 metres) in the new building (opened in 1903) was one of the largest internal spaces in the city at the time. It had large windows, marble walls, and an ornate gilt ceiling 22 metres high. Hundreds of traders operate here, buying and selling shares in stock in the listed companies from brokers located at the posts rising from the floor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange in November 1907. With a camera hidden in the photographer's sleeve, this secret snapshot captures a moment frozen in time. The grandeur of the new building is evident, with its large windows, marble walls, and an opulent gilt ceiling soaring 22 meters high. This expansive space was one of the largest internal areas in the city at that time. In this historical image, hundreds of traders can be seen engaged in intense buying and selling activities. Brokers stationed at their posts rise from the floor as they facilitate transactions for shares in listed companies. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as fortunes are made and lost within these walls. The photograph offers a glimpse into an era marked by economic prosperity and capitalist ambition. It symbolizes both wealth and secrecy, capturing not only financial transactions but also hints at espionage with its mention of a hidden camera. As we observe this snapshot from over a century ago, it serves as a reminder of how far our financial systems have come while also highlighting enduring elements such as human interaction and commerce. This remarkable piece from Library of Congress/Science Photo Library transports us to a pivotal moment in American history when Wall Street was truly at the heart of global finance.
