War memorial at Paddington Station in 1949

This full length image of the newly rededicated war memorial at Paddington appeared in the December 1949 edition of the, by this time, British Railways magazine. Less was made of this event than in the previous war. Indeed, throughout the Second World War the GWR magazine did not include photographs of the fallen as it did during the years 1914 to 1919; the names of the missing and the dead were simply listed in the Among the Staff section of the magazine each month

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the newly rededicated war memorial at Paddington Station in 1949. Published in the December edition of the British Railways magazine, it serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II. Unlike its predecessor, which extensively covered the fallen soldiers with photographs and detailed accounts between 1914 and 1919, this wartime publication took a more subdued approach. The image showcases a full-length view of the majestic monument that stands tall amidst bustling railway activity. The statue, representing an anonymous soldier, exudes strength and resilience while honoring those who lost their lives defending their country. It is a symbol of remembrance for all those who never returned home. During these tumultuous times, when memories were still fresh but gradually fading away into history's tapestry, this photograph preserves an important moment for future generations to reflect upon. As we gaze upon this powerful image today, we are reminded not only of the countless lives lost but also of how society coped differently with grief and commemoration during different periods. The war memorial at Paddington Station stands as both a physical testament to sacrifice and an emotional connection to our past. Its presence reminds us to honor those who gave everything for our freedom while encouraging us to strive for peace so that such memorials may one day become obsolete relics from bygone eras.
