EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Manuel del Socorro Rodriguez, a prominent figure in Cuban history. Born in Bayamo in 1758, Rodriguez made significant contributions to literature and journalism during his lifetime. In 1788, he penned the renowned poem "Tribute to Charles III: The Delights of Spain" which praised the Prince of Asturias and hailed the king as the liberator of Bogota. Rodriguez's influence extended beyond poetry; in 1791, he established Colombia's first newspaper called El Papel Periodico. This groundbreaking publication played a crucial role in shaping public opinion and disseminating information throughout the country. The portrait captures Rodriguez's dignified presence, dressed impeccably in attire typical for that era. His cravat adds an air of sophistication while his focused gaze reflects his dedication to journalism and writing. Preserved on this cigar card from the History of Cuba collection by Geografico Universal, it serves as a testament to Rodriguez's enduring legacy. The monochrome aesthetic enhances its timeless appeal, transporting us back to the vibrant cultural landscape of early 20th-century Cuba. As we admire this remarkable image, we are reminded not only of Rodriguez's individual achievements but also of his contribution to Cuban society at large. His pioneering spirit continues to inspire generations today as they navigate their own paths within journalism and literature.
