EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Ms Hunter 229 f. 15v Pentecost, a page from the renowned Hunterian Psalter dating back to around 1170. Created by an anonymous English artist in the 12th century, this masterpiece is composed using pen and ink as well as tempera on vellum. The image depicts a scene of immense spiritual significance – Pentecost. At its center stands the Virgin Mary, surrounded by twelve apostles who are experiencing a divine moment. The Holy Spirit descends upon them in the form of a dove, while tongues of fire symbolize their ability to speak in different languages. This medieval manuscript offers us a glimpse into religious practices and beliefs during that era. Its meticulous craftsmanship is evident through intricately illuminated initials that mark each Psalm's beginning, along with thirteen full-page pictures and one full-page illumination adorned with gold accents. Preserved within Glasgow University Library in Scotland, this particular page was previously known as the York Psalter before being renamed as the Hunterian Psalter. Its content includes Kalendarivm (calendar), Psalterivm (Psalms), Litania (Litany), and Preces Qvaedam (Various Prayers). Bridgeman Images has captured every detail of this historical treasure for all art enthusiasts to appreciate without commercial use intentions.
