EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving is a replication of Edouard Pingret's painting, "Marguerite of France Leading the Hungarians to the Crusade," created in 1838. The original painting is housed in the National Library of Catalonia (Biblioteca de Catalunya) in Barcelona, Spain. The scene portrays Marguerite of France, the eldest daughter of King Louis VIII of France, rallying the Hungarian troops before embarking on the Third Crusade. The year was 1196, and the crusade was a response to the capture of Richard the Lionheart by Emperor Henry VI of Germany and Emperor Conrad of Austria. Marguerite, dressed in rich, flowing robes, stands atop a horse, her determined expression and outstretched hand commanding the attention of her soldiers. The Hungarian warriors, clad in armor and wielding weapons, follow her lead, their faces displaying a mix of resolve and apprehension. The vibrant colors of the engraving capture the spirit of the outdoor scene, with the sun casting a warm glow over the landscape. The painting's horizontal composition and the use of natural daylight further enhance the sense of movement and energy. The Third Crusade, also known as the Children's Crusade due to the participation of many young people, was a significant event in European history. Marguerite's role in leading the Hungarian contingent adds an intriguing layer to the narrative of this crusade, making this engraving a valuable historical document and an artistic masterpiece.
